New Orleans To Change Name To Pelicans, Return of Charlotte Hornets Near?

The New Orleans Hornets are set to drop the Hornets name and become the Pelicans next season, according to a report from Yahoo Sports. The change was expected after New Orleans ownership change earlier this year.

Since Louisiana is known as the Pelican state, and the bird is on the state flag, the move should be welcome to Lousiana residents. The change would also leave the door open for the Charlotte Bobcats to bring the Hornets name back to Charlotte.

In a recent interview, Bobcats owner Michael Jordan said that he would be interested in changing the name back to the Hornets if the name became available. With the recent news, it now seems inevitable.

Since Jordan took over team, it’s long been rumored that he wanted to get rid of the Bobcats name, which was named by former Bobcats owner, Bob Johnson. If you notice now, the name on the jerseys doesn’t read Bobcats anymore, merely just “Cats.” The team has slowly but noticeably shown the desire to move away from the Bobcats name.

This could be a great change for Charlotte, as the team looks to continue remodeling their image after last seasons 7-59 record. The Charlotte Hornets were embraced much better by the city than the Bobcats have been, and the logo, colors and brand of the Hornets has always been a big merchandising hit.

A big change like this could definitely go a long way into making Charlotte basketball a must-see ticket again. I see no reason why “The Hive” can’t be recreated here. It’d be great to see an updated version of that floor, the pinstripe uniforms, and the old Hornets logo back at midcourt.
