The Charlotte Bobcats Without Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

The Charlotte Bobcats released a statement that Michael Kidd-Gilchrist “was alert and had movement in all extremities before leaving the Toyota Center”, and that is great news after watching him lay motionless on the floor after taking an inadvertent hip-check from Jeff Taylor.

Still, who knows how long Kidd-Gilchrist could be out. He was hospitalized overnight with a concussion, according to USA Today. The way things are now in major sports, it might be a few days, or a few weeks before he comes back depending on the severity of that concussion.

So if he does have to miss significant time, how will the Bobcats fare?

Kidd-Gilchrist is sixth on the team in PER, sixth in points and fifth in assists per game.

He’ll be missed mostly on the glass, and defensive half of the court, though, where he’s third in rebounds per game, fifth in steals per game and second in blocks per game. Amongst Bobcats that actually play, MKG is also third in defensive rating (points produced allowed per 100 possessions), second in defensive win-share (wins contributed by defensive play) and third in overall win-share.

The Bobcats are not a good defensive team, and they’re not a good rebounding team.

If Kidd-Gilchrist misses significant time, it’ll be hard to win without his ball hawking and glass pounding tenacity.

All in all, though, the injury could’ve been much worse than it turned out to be, and our thoughts are still with him and his family as he recovers.
