I went on a bit of a rant about a particular advanced statistic this afternoon, so I’m going to leave Hollinger-metrics out of this Charlotte Bobcats, Boston Celtics preview.

The plain and simple version of this thing is as follows:

The Bobcats are on a depressing losing streak.
Boston has looked impressive since Rajon Rondo got injured.
Charlotte is playing for, apparently, another top four pick.
The Celtics, they think, are playing for another NBA Championship.
The Bobcats are bad. The Celtics are good.

So how does Charlotte beat the odds and pull off the upset?

The Kemba Walker vs Avery Bradley matchup will say a lot about that. Bradley is a very good defender and an OK offensively player. Walker hasn’t hit his stride defensively yet, but he can put the ball through the rim.

Also, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is going to have to be solid against Paul Pierce. With Rondo out, the offense runs through Pierce. All the media expert guys will tell you “without Rondo, this is a more team oriented Celtics offense”. They’re full of crap. This offense is designed to get Pierce the ball where he can hurt people.

Finally, Charlotte’s just going to have to play a very good, very determined game. Boston can’t jump out to any big leads, and the ‘Cats cannot allow the Celtics to win any one statistical category by more than a slim margin.

The odds are stacked against Charlotte, but the losing has to end sometime, right?
