Patrick Ewing has reached an agreement with the Charlotte Bobcats to become an assistant coach for Steve Clifford’s staff, according to a Yahoo Sports report.
The Hall of Fame center worked with Clifford as a player during his time with the New York Knicks and as an assistant with the Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic. New Sacramento Kings coach Mike Malone tried to recruit Ewing for his staff.
Ewing worked eight seasons as an assistant before sitting out last year. He interviewed for the Bobcats head coach vacancy in 2012 and the Detroit Pistons job in 2011. Ewing has received praise for his individual work with Yao Ming and Dwight Howard in both of his stops.
Ewing’s hire could be beneficial for the development of starting center Bismack Biyombo. The 20-year-old center has averaged 5.0 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in two seasons in Charlotte. Biyombo was relatively inexperienced before coming over to the NBA and Ewing could refine his game, as Biyombo looks to make a leap in an important third season.
