Astronomers discover 60 new worlds, find 'super Earth'

It was recently revealed that there is Super-Earth existing in the solar system and discovered that there are 60 new planets.

The experts also found evidence of an additional 54 planets, bringing the potential discovery of new worlds to 114. Researchers say one of the exoplanets, known as Gliese 411-b, is a hot "super Earth".

The super Earth, called the Gliese 411b, sports a rocky surface and is located in the fourth nearest star system to the Sun.

This radial velocity method has been used to discover hundreds of new planets orbiting nearby stars, including the recent discovery of Proxima b orbiting the nearest star to the Sun, Proxima Centauri, a discovery Dr Tuomi was also involved with.

For two decades, scientists observed 1,600 stars using the W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii and discovered 60 new planets outside of the solar system.

Over the course of the 20 year survey, researchers obtained nearly 61,000 observations of 1,600 stars, according to a statement The Carnegie Institution of Science. In fact, the planet is thought to be too hot to support any kind of life on its surface, according to Dr. Mikko Tuomi of the University of Hertfordshire's Centre for Astrophysics, who helped lead the research effort.

However, the planet, GJ 411b, continues a trend that has been seen in the overall population of detected exoplanets: the smallest planets are found around the smallest stars.

"This is something astronomers were not convinced about, even as little as five years ago", Tuomi said in a statement.

Sponsored by NASA and the National Science Foundation, the Lick-Carnegie Exoplanet Survey harnesses the talents of planet hunters from a number of organizations, including the University of California (UC) Santa Cruz and the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C. It represents a good chunk of my life's work'. Interestingly, all the new planets orbit stars that are close to the solar system of the Universe.

"Keck-I telescope and its instruments have been wonderful tools in establishing the current consensus that virtually all stars have planets orbiting them".

These new discoveries have happened thanks to the Lick-Carnegie Exoplanet Survey, an initiative to make years of observations publicly available.

HIRES detects exoplanets using the "radial velocity" method: The instrument picks up the tiny gravitational wobbles that orbiting worlds induce in their parent stars.
