Former Olympic swimming champion Hackett arrested after "breakdown"

Former Olympic swimming champion Hackett arrested after

Australian long distance swimming great Grant Hackett was arrested and detained by police in the Gold Coast on Wednesday after a "breakdown" at his parents' home, local media reported.

Police were called to Hackett's family home around midday following reports of a disturbance, it reported.

Hackett's father Nev has said his son has been arrested due to "mental health issues", but did not make any further comment.

"This is now a chronic problem, so, from a mental health perspective, I hope something can be done", Hackett's brother Craig told Nine News.

"The Grant Hackett that Australia fell in love with, they can still have that affection toward him".

"This is a completely different person", Craig Hackett said. "My mum and dad don't know this person".

A disturbance at the Mermaid Waters property prompted the arrest just before noon today, and the 36-year-old later held his handcuffs up to cameras as he was driven into the Southport watch house.

Early previous year, he was forced to apologise for clashing with a passenger on a domestic flight, notoriously known as the nipple-tweaking episode. "A deep sense of shame, guilt, embarrassment, of regret, I am so sorry for my actions and the people it has impacted", he said.

Hackett was allegedly heavily intoxicated, with his father Nev ultimately calling police.

"It's coming to the point now where he's risky".

Alley called police after Hackett reportedly went on a rampage through their apartment, smashing furniture and photo frames and upending a grand piano.

Hackett retired from swimming in 2008, and failed to make a comeback by qualifying for the Rio Olympics past year.

He again made headlines after he lost his son at Crown Casino, Melbourne, two years later.

'We'll support him the whole way, ' he said. Westpac dumped him as a brand ambassador after the incident, while a children's charity also cut ties.

The swimmer flew to the United States in 2014 to spend time in a rehab centre after he was spotted topless and disoriented in the lobby of a Melbourne casino. Police met Hackett at the terminal where he was questioned.

"Channel Seven, which has filmed a handcuffed Hackett being driven away in a police auto, tweeted that witnesses are claiming Hackett was "'going off' and stabbing a knife into a chopping block". Witnesses claim he was "going off" and stabbing a chopping block.
