Mark Gottfried fired at NC State, will coach remainder of season

On Thursday afternoon, North Carolina State athletic Director Debbie Yow announced that men's head basketball coach Mark Gottfried would not return next season. Gottfried will be allowed to coach out the rest of the season.

Despite the aforementioned news being announced on Thursday afternoon, Gottfried now owns a 122-82 overall record as the head coach at North Carolina State. The Wolfpack has a 3-11 ACC record.

Gottfried's first four teams at NC State made the NCAA Tournament before the school missed the tourney last season.

Gottfried led State to four NCAA Tournament appearances in five full seasons.

Gottfried has a 122-82 record in six seasons at NC State.

Gottfried had this to say: "It has been a privilege to serve as head coach of NC State, and I'm proud of what we have accomplished during my time here".

Gottfried, 53, is owed about $2.5 million as a buyout for the remainder of his contract.

And after a slow start to the 2016-17 season, including six consecutive losses and three by 20 or more points, the Wolfpack have chose to move on from Gottfried.

N.C. State hosts Notre Dame on Saturday and then finishes the regular season with a trip to Georgia Tech (Feb. 21), a home game with Virginia (Feb. 25) and a road game at Clemson (March 1). Outside their talented point guard, who is also guilty of playing like a lost toddler on defense, the Wolfpack have few reliable shot creators, which is why they sit at 14th in the ACC and own a loss to the team sitting at No. 15, Boston College, which is truly a dick-shooting feat to be remembered.

As for a potential replacement, Armstrong reported N.C. State has put out "preliminary feelers" gauging Dayton head coach Archie Miller's interest in the job.
