Monopoly fans hate the thimble, kick it out of the game

Hasbro announced Thursday that it is removing the thimble game piece from Monopoly after it did not garner enough votes in a contest that will determine the eight tokens in an updated version of the board game.

Sewing fans, hold on to your thimbles. Monopoly announced today that the thimble, which has been a standard token since the game was released in 1935, will be removed from future editions. Hasbro said that with more than 4 million votes cast, the thimble didn't make the cut.

The change comes as part of a larger push by the toy company to refresh the tokens, which involved a recent online voting campaign.

It lost out to pieces such as the Scottie dog, the vehicle and the hat in a worldwide public vote over which tokens to save. The choices offered were a hashtag, an emoji, a flip-flop and a rubber duck.

Hasbro will announce the new token lineup on March 19, though fans can get a sneak peak at the results at the New York Toy Fair on February 18-21.

Current versions of the game feature 16 tokens which seems to defeat the objective of everything described in the previous paragraphs, but far be it for us to upset the Big Board Game lobby. New board games featuring the new piece will be available on sale in August 2017.

Although it may seem like an abomination, this isn't the first time Monopoly has shaken things up. In 2013, the iron was replaced with the cat.
