Musk dialogs with Trump, but his companies just took a firmer stand

Joining more than 100 of the largest tech and consumer firms, Elon Musk's Tesla and SpaceX are now backing a legal fight to overturn President Donald Trump's executive order that bars immigrants from seven majority-Muslim nations and Syrian refugees from the U.S.

The companies filed an amicus brief in a case at the ninth circuit court of appeals in San Francisco, brought by the states of Minnesota and Washington, to challenge USA president Donald Trump's executive order.

Uber also received public criticism shortly after the imposition of the January 27 travel ban, as it sparked public outrage by continuing its business as usual, even though taxi drivers began boycotting the New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, where immigrants were being detained. Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Uber, Reddit, Netflix and Dropbox were among the 97 companies that initially signed on to support Washington state's lawsuit against Trump's order.

A SpaceX spokesman on Tuesday said via email the company has "no additional comment, and unfortunately Elon is not available for an interview".

"Immigrants make numerous Nation's greatest discoveries, and create some of the country's most innovative and iconic companies", the brief states. In the letter Musk says that in the meeting "tomorrow" (the letter was published ten hours ago as of writing, presumably tomorrow means today) he and others will express their objections on the executive order on immigration and offer suggestions for changes on the policy.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick was council member who got an earful, and on Thursday dropped out.

According to Trump, "We don't want them here". "Therefore, we request that you create an exception process to address these and other responsible applications for entry into the country".

It goes on to state that the ban "is inflicting substantial harm on US companies", mainly because it "hinders the ability of American companies to attract great talent" and "makes it more hard for American firms to compete in the global marketplace". "Our continued work to advance the technology industry depends greatly on our ability to attract the best and brightest talent from around the world".
