Survey Shows the Majority of Americans Are Stressed AF About Politics

Americans have been taking to the streets in record numbers since the inauguration of President Donald Trump, but amid that uptick in resistance something else has been rising within the nation's electorate: personal anxiety and stress caused by the nation's political reality. Prior to 2016, Americans were most likely to cite money, work and the economy as sources of stress in their lives.

For Democrats, 72 percent said the outcome was stressful, while 26 percent of Republicans said the same. In fact almost three of every four Democrats, 72 percent, said that Trump was causing them significant stress. The APA chose to add questions about the election to last August's survey as so many of its members were reporting election-related stress.

The recent poll is a follow-up to APA's annual Stress in America survey, conducted every August since 2007.

Furthermore, around 66 percent of USA adults are stressed about the country's future, 57 percent about the political climate, and other 49 percent about the outcome of this presidential election.

The current political climate in the United States is causing substantial anxiety, and the percentage of people reporting at least one stress-related health symptom rose almost 10 percent in five months, according to the American Psychological Association. That compares to 38 percent for those with a high school education or less.

Trump-related stress levels of Americans with different levels of education also correspond to the election results. And not only did overall stress increase, what we found in January is the highest significant increase in stress in 10 years.

Sixty-two percent of people living in urban areas reported very or somewhat significant stress related to the election outcome, while only 45 percent of those living in suburban areas and 33 percent of people living in rural areas said the same.

But concern about the future of America runs across party lines.

In other words, most Americans expected Clinton to win the election, and when Trump won a surprise victory, American stress levels spiked. "It seems to suggest that what people thought would happen, that there would be relief [after the election] did not occur, and instead since the election, stress has increased".
