The Mitsubishi Eclipse is back

The Mitsubishi Eclipse is back

Continuing a pre-Geneva show news drip feed, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) said it would be returning to its sporting heritage by deciding to name its new compact SUV Eclipse Cross. It was unfortunately discontinued back in 2012. Hoping to capitalize on consumers' fond memories of their salad days, it's reviving the Eclipse moniker, this time applied to a crossover, with the name "Eclipse Cross".

Unfortunately, none of the promotional materials that have been released for the 2017 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SUV have revealed its technical specs.

Based on both Mitsubishi's press release and the pictures the carmaker has already put out (which we digitally lightened up a bit and embedded below), it seems the new Eclipse Cross will be a fairly small sport-ute. Although it is a compact SUV, it will have a more coupe-like profile.

Mitsubishi has used the word Eclipse as a name before, but not previously for an SUV. The Japanese vehicle manufacturer was able to churn out four generations of the auto.

Having always been synonymous with stylish and capable SUVs and 4x4s, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will line up alongside the ASX and Outlander to broaden the brand's model range.

With the 2017 Geneva Motor Show already scheduled to take place next month, several auto manufacturers are already releasing their different marketing teasers for their new models. It'll be unveiled at next month's Geneva Motor Show.
