Trump insists Supreme Court nominee didn't criticise him

Blumenthal told AP that Ayotte and White House staff members were in the room during his conversation with Gorsuch, that "there's no question that he said that President Trump's attacks on the judiciary are demoralizing and disheartening" and that the nominee added: "You can repeat that". Several other senators, including Republican Sen. "He's had harsh words for the senator from Nebraska, Ben Sasse".

"If he wants the American people to believe that he is truly independent", the CT senator said, "Judge Gorsuch must tell them in no uncertain terms that President Trump's attacks are not just disappointing-they are abhorrent and destructive to our Constitutional system-and he must condemn them publicly".

Gorsuch, who had remained largely silent since Trump nominated him on January 31, made the comments in a meeting with Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, a spokesman for the nominee said, amid preparations for what is expected to be a gruelling confirmation process. This prompted a tweet from President Trump, who accused Blumenthal of misrepresenting what Gorsuch said.

Mr Trump, offered no evidence of his latest claim and took a swipe at Mr Blumenthal in a Twitter post early yesterday. Trump tweeted last Saturday.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, raised specific concerns about whether Gorsuch would be sufficiently independent of the president if confirmed.

"No, the President doesn't have any regrets", Spicer said during his daily press briefing.

"Judge Gorsuch is an impartial judge".

Mr Trump told reporters before a meeting with airline executives on Thursday that Mr Gorsuch's comments about his tweets were "misrepresented".

In a Thursday statement, Kelly Ayotte, the former Republican senator from New Hampshire who is leading the effort to help confirm Gorsuch, said the judge "made it very clear in all of his discussions with senators, including Senator Blumenthal, that he could not comment on any specific cases and that judicial ethics prevent him from commenting on political matters". "Maybe he simply hasn't been informed and that's the reason for his tweet".

Asked if he intends to ask Gorsuch to repeat his critical comments of the president during his Judiciary Committee hearing, Blumenthal replied: "Very definitely". Richard Blumenthal on Thursday, saying the Connecticut Democrat "misrepresents" what his Supreme Court nominee said during a private meeting. In a separate interview with MSNBC on Thursday, Blumenthal said Gorsuch had specifically told him to "feel free" to mention such remarks.

'This is a guy who welled up with some energy.

The ad urges Pennsylvanians to call Casey's office and "tell him to support Judge Gorsuch".

Trump's dig at Blumenthal's military service is a reference to Blumenthal's past misrepresentations about his service during the Vietnam era.

Trump struck back, drudging up Blumenthal's past improprieties about the Vietnam War. Although Blumenthal has a history of distortion - he was exposed in 2010 as having lied about serving in Vietnam while he was in the Marine Reserve - his account of his meeting with Gorsuch was not immediately disputed.
