Why Branden Alberts release is a good move by the Miami Dolphins

Why Branden Alberts release is a good move by the Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins will release left tackle Branden Albert on Thursday, according to NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo.

The Dolphins could potential clear an additional $4.2 million by releasing strong side linebacker Koa Misi, but the neck surgery he underwent in October could complicate matters considering he's not fully health from a football related injury, and might be forced into retirement because of the seriousness of his neck injury.

Tunsil spent most of his rookie season at guard, but he was always projected to move to left tackle eventually.

Williams, 32, contributed 13 tackles and 1.5 sacks in the 13 games he played last season.

Albert allowed three sacks and was penalized three times in 12 starts for Miami last season.

The Dolphins will save $20.4 million in salary cap space with the four moves, affording themselves flexibility to either retain upcoming free agents (including receiver Kenny Stills and defensive end Andre Branch), find new free agents or possibly extend the contracts of players such as receiver Jarvis Landry and safety Reshad Jones.

And so the Dolphins will keep Albert for now, waiting to see whether a trade can be worked out. He spent last season on injured reserve after injuring his knee.

Williams, 32, signed with the Dolphins last offseason after he was released by the Buffalo Bills.

Drafted No. 1 overall by the Houston Texans in the 2006 draft, Williams has 97.5 career sacks, putting him eighth on active leaders list.

It makes sense. The Dolphins pass defense wasn't necessarily bad in 2016, but it wasn't great, either.
