All the water in this town just turned fluorescent pink

Residents in a Canadian town were puzzled to turn on their taps and find the water was fluorescent pink.

Residents of a town in Canada saw something surprising drip out of their tap water faucets this week - pink water. This "alarming" hue is due to the unfortunate side-effect of a common water treatment chemical named potassium permanganate.

"Yesterday, during normal line flushing and filter backwashing, a valve seems to have stuck open allowing potassium permanganate to get into the sump reservoir", reads the statement.

When the unsuspecting locals turned their taps on, they found all of the water had turned pink. "Thanks town of Onoway", posted Trevor Winfield, along with a video of his bathroom sink filling up with Pepto-coloured water. Onoway has since drained its reservoir and is reportedly flushing its distribution system.

Caused by Potassium permanganate, a chemical used in the standard water treatment process, there was no significant health risk to the residents of Onoway, Alberta. While potassium permanganate diluted with water is extensively used as an antiseptic, water-treatment additive, and flame retardant, it can be quite risky in large doses.it can stain and burn skin on contact. He said he wished the residents "could have done a better job communicating what was going on", he added.

"And we do apologise for that".

Krasnow also apologized for the town's lack of communication throughout the matter.

"It was weird. I just didn't use it, I had leftovers, I put what we had in the microwave, I didn't need water to make supper". But I'm sure other people had issues'.

"We were never advised by Alberta Environment to issue a public advisory and all indications are that there was never a public health risk". "Her reason? "[The water] was very, very pink".
