AMD denies Ryzen, Windows 10 incompatibility

AMD denies Ryzen, Windows 10 incompatibility

The company said Windows 10 will be the only supported Windows platform for the newest range of Intel and AMD processors - although the Intel chips still functioned with older versions of the operating system at launch (after a bit of tweaking). The KB article (KB 4012982) applies to users who attempt to update one of those two operating systems, but receive an error message notifying them that their CPU is not supported or a Code 8024003 error (unknown error).

According to Microsoft's support page, the error message is a result of the Windows 10 support policy.

Upgrading your processor to use a new operating system?

If you're running an older version of Windows with a newer CPU, Microsoft is about to make it very hard for you to avoid upgrading to Windows 10. In practice, this is unlikely; Windows 10 is the only operating system receiving any meaningful feature development now, with Windows 8.1 only likely to receive security fixes from now until its end of support in 2023 anyway. Microsoft is still supporting Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 through security patches and, in the case of Windows 8.1, some feature and bugfix updates, so those with the latest hardware will not be able to receive these updates. But when's the last time you had to upgrade your OS to, er, use your OS, because of your processor? It wants to make sure Windows runs as well as possible on new silicon. Microsoft didn't explain to me how it would charge users now the free Window is closed. For example, Windows 10 will be the only supported Windows platform on Intel's upcoming "Kaby Lake" silicon, Qualcomm's upcoming "8996" silicon, and AMD's upcoming "Bristol Ridge" silicon. And the problem is exacerbated by the company's messaging via Windows Update.

In short, if you have a PC with the latest desktop processors from Intel or AMD and you try to run Windows 7 or Windows 8, 8.1 on it, Windows will automatically block all updates, effectively forcing you to move to Windows 10. But what that does also mean is that if there are additional things added to Windows that you dislike, you won't have any option to use an old version of Windows instead.

"May" certainly suggests a level of ambiguity here, and InfoWorld, which initially brought the update to light, points out that the new policy doesn't appear to have been implemented yet. If it was the former, then Windows 10 was installed.
