At SXSW, Joe Biden asks the tech community for help fighting cancer

"Your government, that many of you don't like, is the vehicle of how this gets done". "So cancer doesn't care who you are, what your political views are, and people on both sides of the aisles have lost so many individuals close to them, so this hits home, and let's fight it, let's do something about it", Coy said.

Biden, who called cancer research "the only bipartisan issue left in America", was introduced by his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, who also stressed the importance of tech innovators having a seat at the table in cancer research efforts.

Biden established the National Cancer Moonshot, and addressed it as part of the Connect to End Cancer series in collaboration with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, the AT&T Foundry for Connected Health, and Merck & Co., Inc.

Biden said the innovators at SXSW were the ideal people for the task, and that the tech industry could be instrumental in helping with cancer research.

"I'm confident that the new admin. will be as enthusiastic of ending cancer as we know it", he added.

Same ol' Joe: Biden relied on a tried and true introduction - "My name's Joe Biden, I'm Jill Biden's husband" - and it's just as charming coming from Private Citizen Biden.

He continued on his theme as an entreaty to the creative minds attending the annual, massive conference: "Many of you are developing technologies and innovations for purposes large and small, fun and serious, entertaining and lifesaving, that have nothing to do with cancer - but you could make a enormous impact", Biden continued.

The Biden Foundation's Cancer Initiative has already made strides in bringing various stakeholders to the table to work together.

Throughout his one-hour speech, Biden laid out a vision for the future, where patients received the right treatment without harmful side effects and children were vaccinated against certain kinds of cancers.

We should commend Vice-President Biden for his dedication to finding a cure, and encourage President Trump to follow Biden's lead and pledge to support the fight against cancer, which claims over 500,000 Americans each year.

He praised Republicans for working with Democrats on the fight against cancer while he was in office. "It frustrates me", Biden said.

The Obama White House's anti-cancer task force grew, Biden said, out of an offhand remark he made when announcing in October 2015 that he wouldn't run for the Democratic nomination for president.

Although Biden's speech wasn't listed on the official schedule for what would be shown via live stream from this year's SXSW, the event's Facebook page - which is where the live footage would be streamed on - said "we'll be live streaming exclusive conversations, red carpet coverage, and live performances on Facebook". Last year, for instance, Napster founder Sean Parker donated $250 million to create a research institute that will focus on cancer and immunotherapy.

Biden's plea to techies, at times emotional when he spoke of his son Beau's battle with cancer, was blunt about the challenges that impede cancer research. "I am unable to postpone for one day longer the things we can do now to extend people's lives", Biden said.
