Billionaire banking boss David Rockefeller dies aged 101

David Rockefeller, the famed banker and philanthropist, died Monday at age 101, according to a spokesperson for the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.

Rockefeller, who reportedly gave away almost $2 billion in his lifetime, died in his sleep of congestive heart failure at his home in Pocantico Hills, New York, spokesman Fraser Seitel said in a statement.

He was the grandson of Standard Oil co-founder John D Rockefeller who was also the first billionaire in American history.

"Today the world has lost a great man and philanthropist, and we, a dear friend and inspiration". He relinquished the chairmanship in 1981, when he retired.

At times Rockefeller caused controversy, not least by pushing for trade talks with China and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. To mark his 100th birthday in 2015, Rockefeller gave 1,000 acres of land to the state of Maine, The Associated Press reported.

He was also remembered for his patronage to philanthropy and the arts, preserving his family's close relationship with the Museum of Modern Art. She died in 1996.

Rockefeller and his wife, the former Margaret McGrath, were married in 1940 and had six children - David Jr., Richard, Abby, Neva, Margaret and Eileen.
