Director Gareth Edwards 'won't take on another Star Wars movie'

And amid all the action and excellent storytelling, fans will also get to relive the heartbreaking ending for all those new heroes introduced in the film.

Rebels Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor were originally supposed to make it off Scarif alive, the Empire's Death Star plans safely in-hand.

"If there's ever a time where I have to put that thing on (I thought), 'Oh God, no, here it comes.' It's so bad", says Tudyk, who was not that impressed by the "really rudimentary" piece of poster board that stood in for Kaytoo's face.

But Chris Weitz, who wrote another draft of Rogue One, still believed that they all should die, and he was the one who made the case to the Lucasfilm brass, according to Gary Whitta. "There were a lot of casualties on both sides, in both versions of the scripts".

'The transfer of the plans happened later.

After Jyn and Cassian stole the plans, they ran across the beach (a shot seen in early preview footage) and a Rebel ship dropped down to pick them up. It doesn't have any spirituality or mysticism... a little bit through Donnie Yen's character, but it's very different DNA to the Star Wars films that have come before it. Stop reading now if you care about that sort of thing and you somehow still haven't seen it.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story comes to DVD and Blu-ray April 4.

But then we discover that Jyn and Cassian were able to get away in an escape pod just before Vader destroyed the ship they were on.

In fact, Whitta said the minds behind the story all wanted to kill everyone off because, "If you're going to give your life for anything, give your life for this, to destroy a weapon that going to kill you all anyway".

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story marks what's perhaps the darkest entry of the franchise in part because of the collaborative effort between director Gareth Edwards and the likes of Gary Whitta, who's one of the four writers of the film. Most recently, we learned that the movie nearly had a whole lot less Darth Vader in it.

"We always felt that it was the right thing to do, that these characters make the ultimate sacrifice".

"The fact that we had to jump through so many hoops to keep them alive was the writing gods telling us that if they were meant to live it wouldn't be this hard", said Whitta.

"We told them, we feel they all need to die, and [Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy] and everyone else said to go for it". Let us know your thoughts in the comments below...
