Fadnavis-led delegation to meet PM over loan waiver issue for farmers

Fadnavis-led delegation to meet PM over loan waiver issue for farmers

Intervening in the State Legislative Assembly, which has been witnessing uproarious scenes on demand for farm loan waiver, Fadnavis said that the plight of farmers was due to the policies of the previous Congress-NCP Government, which ruled the State for 15 years.

On estimates that the State Government would need Rs 30,000 crore for the loan waiver, Kadam said, "We appreciate CM's (Fadnavis had made a statement to this effect in the Assembly) understanding of issues but the condition of farmers is critical".

In his statement, Fadnavis clarified that in the state, the the actual amount to be waived is Rs 30,500 crore.

".The government of Maharashtra would participate in the scheme as per the fiscal space of the state", he said, adding that if the debt of these farmers is not serviced, they will be out of institutional credit system.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Friday initiated discussions on a farm loan waiver scheme with the Agriculture Ministry and some States in line with the BJP's promise ahead of Uttar Pradesh elections.

Mumbai: Frustrated with Shiv Sena's pressure tactics for waiver of loan of farmers, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has given ultimatum to Sena to withdraw their protest or he will tender his resignation. Only BJP and Shiv Sena can ask for loan waiver. All these years, expenditure on agriculture investment was very less, he said adding that since his Government came to power, capital expenditure on agriculture and allied sector is Rs 19,434 crore.

"The interesting thing is that during the Fadnavis government's tenure in 2015, 3,228 farmers ended their lives, whereas in the 2016, more than 3,500 farmers committed suicide". The Congress and NCP are shedding crocodile tears in the name of farmers.

The Chief Minister said nearly 16,000 farmers committed suicide in spite of the loan waiver in five years.

Fadnavis said his government was opposed to extending benefit to the banks (which are controlled by Congress and NCP) instead of directly helping farmers in distress. We have spent Rs2,000 crore on crop insurance, Rs8,000 crore on compensation to farmers hit by natural calamities, and Rs11,500 crore on raising farm productivity.

Talking to media persons, leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil charged that through his statement, the Chief Minister had tried to "mislead" the people. "We are not against loan waiver but we are deliberating on when and how it should be done", Fadnavis said.

For the fifth consecutive day, members of the Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP have been trying to stall proceedings - on two separate occasions for half an hour at a time - by demanding loan waivers to farmers.

A day earlier, the Shiv Sena had said it will not allow Budget presentation before announcement of farm debt write-off.
