Fitbit upgrades the Alta with a heart rate monitor, improved sleep tracking

As is common with Fitbit devices these days, there will also be a host of changeable bands on offer to go with the Alta HR, starting at £20 each, as well as a stainless steel bracelet created to be used alongside other jewellery.

Fitbit will roll out Sleep Stages and Sleep Insights to more of its devices as well.

Other Fitbit devices will also be able to take advantage of the new technology this spring.

We're really happy to see a more watch-like clasp this time aroundOther than the addition of a heart rate sensor, the Alta HR is very similar to the original Alta. And this is one of the best parts: Fitbit products are energized by its huge user community, where you can compete against friends, family members and colleagues.

Sleep Insights, meanwhile, uses Fitbit data gained from over three billion nights of logged sleep (that's about 2.5 million years) to provide "actionable guidance and coaching" to help you improve the quality of your sleep.

The new Fitbit's heart rate monitor is a shrunken version of what exists in the Fitbit Charge 2, and Fitbit says the Alta HR is 25 percent smaller than the Charge 2.

Of course, these new sleeping features aren't exclusive to the Alta HR; Sleep Stages will work with the Alta HR, Blaze and Charge 2, while Sleep Insights will be available with all Fitbit devices that track sleep. The smaller heart rate monitor is just the beginning of what could be a series of better and slimmer Fitbit devices on the way. The HR still won't be able to give you a flawless picture of your sleep quality, but it will give you a better picture than one painted with movement alone. The $150 Alta HR is also cheaper than the $250 Surge and $200 Blaze, and comes in black, blue gray, fuschia, and coral, as well as the "special-edition" colors gunmetal and rose gold.

Luxe stainless steel bracelet that can stack with your other jewellery. Collaborations with fashion designers like Tory Burch and PUBLIC SCHOOL followed, giving the Alta an extra aesthetic boost and its wearers more options to accessorize their device. If you're interested in picking up the Alta HR, you can preorder now from Fitbit's website or wait until April and pick yours up in store or online. If you usually sleep six hours during weekdays, but average nine hours over the weekend, your Fitbit Alta HR may suggest to you that you are not getting enough sleep during the week.

Fitbit also claims the Alta HR consumes less battery life thanks to its shrunken guts. Let us know in the comments.
