Get ready to give the thumbs up to Netflix's new rating system

Next time you're going to rate a movie or TV series on Netflix, you won't be able to give it a number of stars you think it deserves.

"Five stars feels very yesterday now", Netflix's vice president of product Todd Yellin said at a press briefing. This system will be personalised based on which titles a user has given a "thumbs up" or a "thumbs down" to in the past. They argue that with Facebook, simply clicking on the thumbs up icon gives users a stronger connection to the media they are interacting with. If that's the only kind of data users see from thumb ratings it won't be as helpful as a raw percentage of a certain title's popularity with other Netflix viewers. In that case, they'd "be rating for the quality and what you'd want to project out there", Yellin said, versus what they actually spend time watching.

If you'll miss the nuance of the star ratings though, another change that Netflix is making to improve suggestions is a percent-match feature.

While that's still the streaming content giant's approach, their rating system will be simplified into a Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down approach. Apparently, there was a pattern found in users that used the 1-5 star rating system, that rendered said system less than accurate.

According to Variety, Netflix tested the thumbs-up/thumbs-down system in 2016, with the result being a 200% increase in ratings.

Netflix is introducing a new button that will enable views to "skip" the opening credits on original and third-party content alike.

It was reported a year ago that Netflix was looking to move away from its old way of rating shows and movies, when the company began beta testing the "thumbs".

But with an increasingly deep catalog of movies and TV shows to draw from, Netflix wants to make sure that users aren't overwhelmed by choices.
