May: 'Now is not the time' for Scottish independence vote

THERESA MAY has swiped at Nicola Sturgeon for seeking to "play politics and create uncertainty" with a second referendum as she welcomed the passing of the Brexit Bill last night.

Ms Sturgeon was accused by Brexit Secretary David Davis of deliberately stoking rows over Britain leaving the European Union to fuel her independence campaign.

Sturgeon is by no means guaranteed of winning a referendum just 2-1/2 years after Scots voted to keep the union, but she has managed to put pressure on May just days before Britain is expected to trigger Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty and start the formal divorce procedure.

"Until we get more clarity on the political and economic outlook, we are not yet ready to repatriate assets back into the United Kingdom", he said.

But May said earlier that the Tories would not allow any discussion of the referendum until the UK's Brexit deal had been signed and Scottish voters had time to weigh it up, implying any referendum may not happen until 2021 at the earliest.

"Right now we should be working together, not pulling apart".

"I accept that the prime minister has said what she has said today".

Addressing Parliament on last week's EU Council summit, the PM took aim at the Scottish First Minister by saying that now was the time to "bring our country together" and "to honour the will of the British people".

May has said it would be "unfair" to hold a vote until the UK's future relationship with the European Union is made clear.

Nicola Sturgeon responded to the Prime Minister's statement on Twitter, branding the move "undemocratic" and calling it proof that 'the Tories fear the verdict of the Scottish people'.

Monday night's forward movement for Ms May gets neutralised by her immediate criticism of the fresh initiative of the Scottish National Party (SNP) ~ "The party had a tunnel vision on breaking away from the UK".

Scottish Secretary David Mundell confirmed that the UK Government will not enter into negotiations with the Scottish government on a second referendum.

Sturgeon accused May of "blocking Scotland's right to choose". Polling expert John Curtice told Business Insider that doing so would cause a surge in support for independence and be "politically catastrophic".

We are not proposing a referendum now - we are proposing to give the people of Scotland a choice once Brexit is clear but before it is too late.

We must have the option open to the people of Scotland to secure a new vote - that is what the First Minister is calling for. "We still hope they will step back from that vote".
