MSNBC reveals Donald Trump's 2005 tax return

The White House has said Donald Trump earned $150m in 2005 and paid over $38m in taxes, revealing previously undisclosed details as his tax return for that year was leaked. The Washington Post reported last year that Trump paid no federal income taxes for at least two years in the late 1970s.

"Despite this substantial income figure and tax paid, it is totally illegal to steal and publish tax returns", the White House said.

Reuters released the White House's preemptive response minutes prior to Maddow's broadcast, criticizing the show of being "desperate for ratings".

For an hour and a half on Tuesday night, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow whipped America's left into a froth, dangling on Twitter the prospect that she would reveal Donald Trump's tax returns on live TV that evening. According to Maddow, the tax returns were given to her by reporter David Johnston who said they had turned up unexpectedly in his mailbox.

But the 2005 return showed amounts owed but, crucially, not sources of income that would confirm or repudiate questions about Trump's business ties.

Trump's tax returns became a sticking point during the general election when he refused to release them, despite every president since Jimmy Carter doing so.

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow trailed the segment with a Tweet saying "We've got Trump tax returns tonight". In January, Kellyanne Conway said Trump didn't intend to release his taxes now that he was in office, claiming the American people "didn't care". But the show's host Maddow argued that MSNBC was exercising its First Amendment right to publish information in the public interest.

It's unclear who sent the tax returns to Johnston, a former tax reporter for the New York Times who wrote a book about Trump.

The issue was a major campaign point of attack from his rival Hillary Clinton, who suggested Mr Trump had something to hide.
