'No evidence' Obama had wiretap on Trump Tower

The leaders of a House intelligence committee said on Wednesday they have seen "no evidence" backing up President Trump's claims that former President Obama wiretapped his phones at the Trump Tower during the election.

"President Obama wouldn't physically go over and wiretap Trump Tower, so now you have to decide ... are you going to take the tweets literally, and if you are, then clearly the president was wrong", California Rep. Devin Nunes told reporters on Capitol Hill.

"We don't have any evidence" that President Obama tapped Trump Tower, Nunes said, echoing his remarks from last week.

The White House said Tuesday that Trump is "extremely confident" that the Justice Department will produce evidence to substantiate his claims.

Mr. Trump himself has provided no evidence that Trump Tower, where he lived and ran his campaign, was wiretapped by Obama. After all, his accusations were not only prompted by a whack-ass conspiracy theory, but he'd also recently gone "ballistic" on staff after Attorney General Jeff Sessions' recusal from all investigations into Trump-Russia ties.

Graham says he's also waiting to hear from Comey whether a warrant was issued that would have allowed the Obama administration to tap Mr. Trump's phones during the campaign.

There is "absolutely no evidence, no suggestion of any evidence of that", Schiff added.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, however, is impatient with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Trump's allegations have put him in a potentially perilous position as congressional investigations into Russia's involvement in the 2016 election - and possible Russian contacts with Trump associates - ramp up.

Reportedly, Nunes and his committee have asked the Justice Department to respond to their request for "relevant" information prior to March 20 - as FBI Director James Comey is expected to testify at a hearing that same day.

In a response Monday evening, the Justice Department said it needed extra time to "review the request in compliance with the governing legal authorities and to determine what if any responsive documents may exist".

What was Trump referring to?

The Trump administration is now under mounting pressure to provide proof to shore up the president's unsubstantiated allegation.

Top Republican lawmaker and frequent Trump critic Senator John McCain on Sunday challenged Trump to prove the wiretapping claim - or else retract it. Richard Burr the Senate panel chairman stated that they have had talks with all the right people and the committee has enough responses to concerning the wiretapping claims.
