North announces successful test of powerful engine

The test was conducted at the North Korea's northwest facility, where the country has been launching rockets to put satellites into orbit, the Korean Central News Agency said on Sunday.

The Washington-based think tank 38 North said last week satellite imagery indicated activity at the site's vertical engine stand, possibly in preparation for a rocket engine test.

It statement continued, "He [Kim] emphasised that the whole world will soon witness what eventful significance the great victory won today carries".

There has been growing speculation that the North will conduct an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test after Kim used a New Year's Day address to claim that Pyongyang was in the final stages of developing a long-range missile capable of hitting NY and Washington. It was developed without "dependence on the technology of other countries", KCNA said.

Tillerson said of the USA and China, "we will work together to see if we can not bring the government in Pyongyang to a place where they want to make a different course - make a course correction and move away from their development of their nuclear weapons".

USA relations with China have been rocky, with China irritated at repeatedly being told to rein in the North.

It said the test was meant to confirm the engine's thrust power and gauge the reliability of its control system and structural safety.

Rocket engines can be easily repurposed for use in missiles.

The test occurred as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was due to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

China wants the U.S. and North Korea to negotiate directly; the USA insists North Korean leader Kim Jong Un make a credible show he's willing to give up his nuclear program before talks can begin.

Kinzinger also pointed to missile defense in Europe and the United States as "extremely important". That and several recent missile tests have injected new urgency into efforts to halt his weapons program.

North Korea announced the testing of a new rocket engine on March 19, which would be used in missiles such as these pictured in the March 7 edition of North Korea's official Rodong Sinmun newspaper. "China has done little to help!"
