Penélope Cruz is Donatella Versace in 'Versace: American Crime Story'

An Oscar-winning actress, this will mark Cruz's first time as a regular on a television series.

We already knew that Lady Gaga won't be playing Donatella Versace in American Crime Story Season 3, but now we know who will: Oscar victor Penelope Cruz will portray the fashion executive and designer on Ryan Murphy's series, People confirmed. Cruz will play Donatella Versace, Gianni's sister who took over the Versace brand after his death.

It was reported in November that Lady Gaga was going to play Donatella, but that has turned out to not be true. But this news puts those rumors to rest. The Versace installment is also slated to air in 2018.

In 2009, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in the Woody Allen film Vicky Cristina Barcelona, along with a BAFTA, an NYFCC and an NBR Award. Since marrying fellow Oscar-winning Spaniard Javier Bardem in 2010, Cruz has been flying under the radar, appearing past year in the ill-fated Zoolander 2.

Versace, from Fox 21 and FX Productions, will be based on the book Vulgar Favors by Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth, with Tom Rob Smith (London Spy) set to write the first two and multiple subsequent episodes.

The limited series show, created by Ryan Murphy, centers each season around a famous true crime - the first season was the award-winning "The People v. O. J. Simpson"; the second season, now in development, focuses on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Murphy has also already confirmed the focus of the fourth installment: the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal.

Cruz isn't the first big name to sign on to the anthology show; the first season starred John Travolta, Sarah Paulson and Cuba Gooding Jr.
