Secret Service stepping up security after multiple scares

Secret Service stepping up security after multiple scares

A man was detained on Saturday afternoon after he jumped over an outer barrier surrounding the White House.

The auto was stopped Saturday around 11:00 p.m. about a quarter-mile from the White House. The Secret Service has not yet revealed exactly why they determined that the man or his vehicle to be suspicious, but they're clearly taking no chances after the first incident. Last May, a man named Jesse Olivieri from Pennsylvania brandished a firearm at a White House security checkpoint and was then shot and injured by the Secret Service before being detained.

The vehicle was being checked, sources told the network.

The Secret Service is also facing scrutiny after an agency laptop was stolen from an agent's auto in NY on Thursday.

It's latest White House intrusion.

A bomb squad and Secret Service agents spent more than four hours searching the vehicle, at one point bringing in a robot to take out items from the truck.

President Trump was in Florida at the time of both incidents.

Saturday evening's incident was the second of the day.

Also in 2014, while Barack Obama was President, an army veteran described as mentally disturbed made it into the White House grounds and was later arrested.

Criminal charges were pending, the Secret Service said.

He was then able to scale an 8-foot vehicle gate followed by a 3.5-foot fence near the East Wing of the White House grounds.

But the Secret Service has seemed to learn from its past mistake, as the suspect was apprehended quickly and CNN noted the area is now secure.

On November 26, 2015, a man draped in an American flag climbed a White House fence during a Thanksgiving celebration at the executive mansion.

"It makes no sense, and I don't know what in the world they're doing, but it is a total and complete embarrassment".

Petri, in case you (like the White House) haven't noticed, is a talented humor columnist.
