Senate Panel: There's No Evidence to Trump's Wiretap Claim

Senate Panel: There's No Evidence to Trump's Wiretap Claim

The House Committee holds a hearing Monday with Director of National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers and FBI Director James Comey.

The wiretapping allegations have hung over the White House for two weeks, since Trump first alleged in a series of tweets that Obama had wiretapped his telephones at Trump Tower in NY.

Trump accused Obama of wiretapping him during the late stages of the campaign, but provided no evidence.

"We've cleared that up", Ryan said, adding that he'd received a briefing and seen no evidence of Trump's wiretap claims.

On Thursday, White House spokesman Sean Spicer, defending his boss, cited a Fox News report that Obama had recruited Britain's signals intelligence agency GCHQ a year ago to wiretap Trump Tower in NY, a luxury office and residential skyscraper that serves as both Trump's home and offices.

The hearing is related to the committee's ongoing investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Quigley referred to his resolution as "a task not welcomed but necessitated by the President's seemingly baseless accusations that the Obama administration wiretapped Trump Tower during the presidential campaign" when he introduced the resolution on Thursday.

"In fact, I don't believe just in the last week of time, the people we've talked to, I don't think there was an actual tap of Trump Tower".

But he said the Office of the Director of National Intelligence was reluctant to let the House Intelligence Committee have access to its high-tech materials that could establish whether Trump was right.

On March 9, Mr Comey briefed Mr Nunes, Mr Schiff, Mr Ryan, Me Burr, Mr Warner and three other top congressional officials on the same intelligence.

"We don't know how anybody would have that information unless they have different information than me because we know that Flynn was picked up on incidental collection", Nunes said.

Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Vice Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., issued the statement only hours after Trump told Fox News' Tucker Carlson that he would be providing evidence of his claims "very soon". Spicer meanwhile, insisted the Intelligence Committee's statement issued today is a progress report, not the final word, because "they have yet to go through the information".

That claim, like all of Trump's allegations about being under surveillance, are unsubstantiated.

"All we did was quote a certain very talented legal mind who was the one responsible for saying that on television", Trump said. They say they're asking for the total number of Americans whose names were mentioned.

The accusations - flatly denied by Obama - were at first seen as frivolous, spur-of-the-moment comments after a politically bruising week, which Trump and his team could later retreat from without much damage. "This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!", Mr Trump wrote.
