Sensex, Nifty at record high on GST roll out hopes

The Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange is up 29 points or 0.32% at 9182.70, after rising to a new high of 9218.40.

On Thursday, Nifty touched 9,158.45 points to break even that record. Selling was seen in PSU Bank, media and infra sectors, which dragged the Nifty down from its intra-day record high of 9,218. Metal stocks, which were the most prominent gainers in the previous session, are mostly higher this morning.

The barometer 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the BSE, which opened at 29,755.74 points, provisionally closed at 29,648.99 points (at 3.30 p.m.) - up 63.14 points or 0.21 per cent from the previous close at 29,585.85 points.

The rally in markets was mostly driven by policy stance revealed by US Federal Reserve that it will keep interest rates in the range of 0.75 per cent to 1 per cent going ahead in the new fiscal.

Advances outnumbered declines almost 3:1 on the NSE with 1,153 securities out of a total of 1,741 advancing, 490 declining and 98 remaining unchanged. "Extended decline in VIX as well as continued FII buying have also propped up sentiment", said Anand James, Chief Market Strategist, Geojit Financial Services.

Mumbai: The benchmark NSE Nifty on Friday crossed the psychologically significant 9,200-level for the first time during intra-day trade even as the Indian equity markets traded on a flat note as investors turned to book profits.

Among the Asian markets, China's Shanghai Composite was up 21.32 points, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index surged over 270 points.

In the forex market, the rupee opened at 65.45 against the US dollar, down 4 paise from its previous close of 65.41. While other sectors, such as Nifty Bank gained 2.2%, Nifty Pharma gained 2% and Nifty Auto gained 2.4% during this week, that ended on Friday.

The stocks have been spurred by buying in key FMCG heavyweight shares. Oil & Gas, Capital Goods reduced more than 50 point each.
