Toronto Police arrest Marc and Jodie Emery, raid dispensaries

He said seven Cannabis Culture locations - five in Toronto, one in Hamilton and another in Vancouver - were searched along with two homes in Toronto, one in Stoney Creek, and one in Vancouver.

Marc Emery has been charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, three counts of trafficking, five counts of possession, five counts of possession of proceeds of crime, and fail-to-comply recognizance.

Some of them are Cannabis Culture locations, a chain of dispensaries owned by the Emerys.

The couple was being held for a bail hearing at Old City Hall on Thursday morning, Kirk Tousaw posted on Facebook.

Raids are also being conducted at Cannabis Culture shops in Ottawa and Toronto.

"Cannabis Culture stores across Canada being raided at behest of Toronto Police". Also hearing of raids at other Cannabis Culture franchise in ON. "This is the latest effort in our law enforcement, and I'm certain there will be further action".

Tousaw says he's getting reports that Vancouver dispensaries are not being raided as part of Project Gator - yet. "There is no harm being done by the production and sale of cannabis, for medical or recreational purposes, in storefront dispensaries".

The federal government is moving to legalize marijuana, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized late previous year that the current laws exist.

The Emery's run about a dozen shops across Canada. "It has nothing to do with protecting the children or keeping it out the hands of organized crime or anything else that they're saying in their statements".

Emery has been jailed several times, most notably in 2009 when he served over four years of a five-year sentence in a United States federal prison for selling mail-order cannabis seeds into the U.S.

Jodie Emery was first arrested in Montreal last December - along with Marc and eight other people- the day after Cannabis Culture officially opened six new dispensaries in the city.
