Trump Administration To Review Vehicle Emissions Rules

Trump Administration To Review Vehicle Emissions Rules

In a sprawling Detroit speech Wednesday, President Trump doubled down on his pledge to bring back American jobs, telling the audience his efforts in the Oval Office are already paying off.

EPAOn its way out the door in January, the Obama administration rushed to lock in the Environmental Protection Agency's Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) standards at 54.5 miles per gallon for light duty vehicles by 2025. The move is a victory for carmakers who have claimed the standards are too onerous and out of step with Americans' vehicle buying habits.

The CAFE standards, which call for manufacturers to boost their fleet-wide fuel economy to an average of 50.8 mpg by 2025 from the current 35.3 mpg, will remain in place while under a review that was initially promised by the Obama administration, before Mr. Obama changed course in his final days in office.

The review follows an appeal from the industry, which wants a relaxation of the standards and more flexibility in how to meet them.

But hopefully it will begin a new era of rule-making rooted in market and technological reality and not meant to punish automakers and autoworkers for making cars.

In his remarks, the president said he will revive a mid-term review process that had been scheduled for the coming regulations. "There was a lot of data that was submitted, and I think it is fair to say the Obama EPA just ignored it".

Ahead of the speech, the President held a roundtable discussion with auto industry CEOs, including executives from Detroit's "Big Three" automakers, General Motors, Ford, and Fiat Chrysler. Trump has expressed admiration for Jackson, who died in 1845.

'There is no more handsome sight than an American-made vehicle.

A White House official told reporters today that the carmakers doing business in the USA were right to decry what was perceived as a power play by the Obama administration.

The nuclear option. Trump could kill waivers that now allow California to set its own mileage and emissions standards, a regime that dates to 1970, when the federal Clean Air Act was enacted.

President Donald Trump thinks his chief of staff could run a auto company one day.

Automakers have agreed that cheap gas and the rise in popularity of utility vehicles will make the current standards almost impossible to achieve.

Carmakers welcomed the review.

Sean Spicer said Trump's trip to MI will involve discussion with auto executives on "rolling back federal red tape" and as those executives have made it known, the CAFE standards strike fear into their hearts.

The review of the fuel efficiency standards came under fire from environmental groups, some of which vowed to challenge Mr. Trump's action in court.

Trump is also mulling whether to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord.

The auto industry liked the deal because it got a road map for new technologies and regulations through 2025, and unprecedented visibility for their long-term investment plans.

The group, which includes Mars, General Mills and Ikea, warned that "failure to tackle climate change could put America's economic prosperity at risk".
