TSA Changes Pat Down Protocol

TSA Changes Pat Down Protocol

In the past, TSA agents used one of five different procedures for physical searches of travelers.

Denver International Airport reportedly notified employees and flight crews that the "more rigorous" searches "will be more thorough and may involve an officer making more intimate contact than before". A pat-down can involve the "inspection of the head, neck, arms, torso, legs and feet" as well as "head coverings and sensitive areas such as the breasts, groin and the buttocks", according to the TSA website.

According to Bloomberg, the change is in response to a Department of Homeland Security investigation that found widespread failure by TSA to seize weapons from undercover agents. Passengers can also request the screening be conducted in a private area and that a witness be present.

But does the new procedure really make flying safer?

"Individuals transiting the TSA security checkpoint who have opted out of technology screening, or alarmed the technology or a canine team, will undergo a pat-down", the statement from TSA said.

Frequent traveler Joel Stratte-McClure told NBC News that a TSA agent at Redding Municipal Airport in California warned him the new procedure "would involve a more intense horizontal and vertical pat down" to look for concealed weapons hidden in a traveler's trousers.

Previously, security agents at United States airports had five approved methods to turn to when conducting a pat-down.

Travelers should expect to go through stricter security at US airports. Pat downs over sensitive areas of the body. The agency said it doesn't track how many passengers are subject to pat-down searches. Alternatively, you can demand that the pat-down be held in public view.

The new pat-down police has been phased in over the past two weeks. Travelers routinely complain about screenings that they say cross a line.

"We appreciate our partner, the TSA, providing us information about these universal pat-downs and the standardization", Bidwell said.
