Tusk to run for the European Union presidency despite Polish opposition?

EU President Donald Tusk on Wednesday rejected charges from Poland's rightwing government that he has sought to undermine it, on the eve of a vote on his leadership.

Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said Thursday that Poland will do everything it can to block Tusk's re-election.

The former Polish prime minister thanked European Union leaders for their support following a controversial campaign for the top job.

Support for Tusk was also voiced by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French president Francois Hollande, who see in a vote for Tusk a vote for continuity and stability.

After being confirmed as president, he tweeted: "Grateful for trust & positive assessment by #EUCO (European Council)".

Szydlo made the comments after Donald Tusk, her compatriot but political foe, was given a second term to chair the European Union summits by all the other 27 European Union states despite Poland's objections.

"One can only hope that the conflict will be resolved so we don't have a great divide in Europe", Gabriel said, when asked about Poland's stance on Tusk.

Poland's government wants a Polish center-right European lawmaker, Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, to replace Tusk, whose term ends May 31.

The EU Commission suspects Poland's nationalist government of violating EU rule of law principles, over its changes to Poland's constitutional court and restrictions on the media. "The conclusion from Brexit should not be "we need more multi-speed Europe", a European diplomat said on condition of anonymity.

So far Poland has won support only from Hungary - led by the outspoken, anti-immigration Viktor Orban.

The hostilities between Kaczynski and Tusk are said ot be personal, as Kaczynski holds Tusk "morally responsible" for his twin brothers death in a 2010 plane crash over Russian Federation.

The election will be overseen by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat of Malta, which holds the EU's rotating presidency.

Kaczynski said the vote showed the European Union was run by Germany and was trampling on national interests: "If the European Union does not abandon this road, it will be consigned to history", he said in Warsaw.
