Winter Storm Stella grounds SAA flights to America

Winter Storm Stella grounds SAA flights to America

Thousands of flights in and out of the northeast have been canceled Tuesday, ahead of a major winter storm.

Nationwide, more than 4,280 flights had been axed since Sunday, according to a 11:55 a.m. ET check of flight-tracking service FlightAware.

USA airlines have scrapped about 5,400 flights Tuesday as a late-winter storm dumps snow on some of the nation's busiest airports.

With a snowstorm also blanketing Chicago with 3-6 inches of snow on Monday, it's all adding up to a travel nightmare for much of the US, which means your plane to somewhere is probably going nowhere.

SAS cancelled all of its flights from Scandinavia to NY on Tuesday on the grounds of the blizzard conditions, impacting routes from Stockholm as well as Copenhagen and Oslo.

Chicago saw the largest share of Monday's cancellations, while Tuesday's disruptions are hitting hardest in the East, from Washington to Boston and the New York City area.

Underscoring how weather problems in the Northeast can ripple out to other parts of the country, even some Florida flights had already been canceled Wednesday. From New York, three flights were cancelled.

Spirit: Customers flying throughj affected airports can travel at the same fare, without paying modification fees, through March 16 or March 18, depending on city. Turkish Airlines earlier announced it was cancelling four round-trip flights to the Big Apple. It is believed that projections for more cancellations and delays will continuously increase well into Tuesday.

For example, Chicago is the most affected city: 47 per cent of all the flights in and from the city have been disrupted. Southwest Airlines and American Airlines have had the most flights cancelled today, but JetBlue and Republic Airlines are running just about half their scheduled flights. "And it's important for passengers to realize that while some airlines have eliminated fees to change your ticket due to the snowstorm, if you booked through a third-party site, you need to check with them". Officials said they will gradually resume flight operations after 8 a.m. ET.
