Wisconsin upsets top-seeded Villanova

The first day of the NCAA Tournament didn't have a Cinderella feel to it. No. 1 overall seed and the reigning national champs, Villanova.

That's the reality the Wildcats will have to endure, at least in the short term, as March moves on without them. DiVincenzo made up for it by hitting a 3-pointer on Villanova's next possession.

The latter feels more likely, given Wisconsin's solid defense and pace of play matched against Villanova's slow pace of play.

That was just the beginning of Tech's first half issues. Lauri Markkanen and Rawle Atkins each scored 20 points. Villanova (8-27) shot a dismal 29.6 per cent. Six Boilermakers scored in double figures, including Vince Edwards with 21 points.

#14 Florida Gulf Coast 80 #3 Florida State 86: Dunk city didn't turn into another small sensation, trailing the entire second half before making it a bit closer in the end. Two of the made free throws completed 3-point plays to give UW leads of five and four points. Speaking of Happ, his 10 points and 8 rebounds was a relatively mediocre night for one of the conference's top players. Monte Morris was terrific as he begins his final NCAA Tournament, leading Iowa State with 19 points.

The Hokies (22-10) had a different reaction to being seeded one line lower than Wisconin.

"They see the sands going through the hourglass, knowing there's not much time left, regardless of how we finish it out", Gard said on the eve of an experience-rich game against Villanova that will match teams that have been to the past two national championship games. Hopefully he gets out of his shooting slump as Villanova is going to need plenty of firepower to get past Wisconsin.

Even the lower-seeded teams that won were not surprising.

Princeton's Devin Cannady missed a 3-pointer with seven seconds left in regulation that would have given the Tigers a lead. Xavier play FSU in the round of 32.

Marquette's Sacar Anim (2) shoots over South Carolina's Justin McKie (20) during the second half in a first-round game of the NCAA men's college basketball tournament in Greenville, S.C., Friday, March 17, 2017. The Badgers rarely foul, give up offensive rebounds or allow easy baskets inside. They play Northwestern first. 86-80 in their matchup in the first round. For that reason alone, it felt like against the wrong team, on the wrong night in the Big Dance, they could be beaten. Here's how to enjoy today's West regional matchup between the #5 seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the #4 seed West Virginia Mountaineers. We change up defenses more.

The Wildcats cruised in the second half against Mount Saint Mary's in the opening round.

Outside of the fact that we won't be having a repeat victor - something that hasn't happened since 2007 when Florida won it's second of back-to-back titles - there's the bracket busting angle to consider.

#12 UNC Wilmington 71 #5 Virginia 76: 147 points in a Virginia game? This is only Virginia Tech's second game against Wisconsin.
