The worst season in NBA history is in the books, and it’s time to look at the players who made it all possible.

In the coming days I’ll take a look at every single Bobcats player (and I mean every single one), grade their season, and take a look into their future.

The other day I looked at Bismack Biyombo’s (up and down rookie) season. Today, it’s Corey Maggette’s turn.

Offense: C

You almost have to feel as bad for Maggette as you do for the entire Bobcats team (yeah he makes more money than most of us will ever see, but that’s besides the point). The guy played in less than half of of Charlotte’s games this year because of injury, and was never really able to get things going.

Still, he had a 100 offensive rating (points produced per 100 possessions), scored almost 20 points per 36 minutes and shot 86 percent from the line on 8.5 attempts per 36 minutes.

On the downside, he only averaged 1.6 assists per 36 minutes.

Defense: F

Like most of his teammates, Maggette was dreadful defensively this season.

A 112 defensive rating (points produced allowed per 100 possessions), 0.1 defensive-win-share (number of wins contributed by a players defense) and a combined 0.7 blocks and steals per 36 minutes are just a part of the terrifying reality that was Maggette’s defense in 2012.

Miscellaneous: C

Although he had a negative assist-to-turnover ratio, Maggette was solid with the ball all season. His turnover percentage (turnovers per 100 possessions) was just 11.3.

He also managed to grab 5.1 rebounds per 36 minutes, despite his injuries.

Overall: C-

Injuries and defense notwithstanding, Maggette had a pretty decent season.

But, if Charlotte is going to do anything in the way of winning next year, he’ll have to stay healthy, produce at the same per 36 level he did this year and teach his young teammates a thing or two about getting to the free-throw line.

Real basketball. Actual schedules. Not that day dream they released back when the league was still pretending they would push a full season. That schedule had the Charlotte Bobcats only playing one game before an audience that would reach outside their standard viewing area. Now, for whatever reason, whether it is the gathering swell of interest behind Bobcats rookie Kemba Walker or the tightened, shrunken schedule neccessitates looking outside of the Northeast and any team with 3 All-Stars, the Bobcats will find themselves on NBA-TV three times and TNT once.

We are 2 days from coaches and other team personnel being allowed to work with players. We are those same two days away from league business opening up. Trades, free agent signings, that ridiculous superstar at the end of a deal merry-go-round garbage, all begins in earnest on Friday.

It’s a time game right now. The schedule is out now and teams can start, after that free agency period and they get a team, to plan their year. The Bobcats are looking at two pre-season games, a home-and-home with the Hawks. That’s the way the NBA has laid it out for every team. They paired up neighbors. Milwaukee plays Minnesota, Orlando plays Miami, the Knicks play the Nets. Who knows what those pre-season games will look like. Not a whole lot of time or much to contrast in two games to try things out before getting into the stuff that counts. (more…)
