It is not everyday the Bobcats win, it is not everyday the Bobcats comeback from a 19 point first quarter deficit, and you certainly never see two Bobcats score 30+ in the same game, but on Wednesday night all those things happened in the same game.

The Bobcats even scored over 100 points. The bigtime scorers tonight for the Cats’ were Kemba Walker with 34 and Gerald Henderson with 34. Both players played extremely efficiently and added some nice defensive plays throughout the game.

Bismack Biyombo on the defensive end added some nice blocks, and added 11 points, seven rebounds, and had a +/- or +23.

For the Magic Tobias Harris went off with 29. Unfortunately for him almost half his team was injured limiting the Magic’s scoring options. Kyle O’ Quinn added 23 points, but it just was not the Magic’s night.

Perhaps the most amazing part of tonight’s game is the fact that the Bobcats were down 19 after the first quarter before reeling off three straight quarters of 30+ points. For a team that normally struggles to score tonight everything was clicking on the offensive end.

Earlier in the season, I said it was time for the Charlotte Bobcats to move on from starting shooting guard Gerald Henderson. The 25-year-old, who’s spent all four of his NBA seasons with the Bobcats, becomes a restricted free agent this summer. With the surplus of guards in Charlotte’s backcourt, Henderson made the most sense to sell high on to balance out the roster with a different asset.

There were on and off rumors that Henderson was shopped at the NBA’s Trade Deadline. However, Charlotte apparently never found a match or rumors were simply just that. Since the all-star break Henderson has put together his strongest stretch of the season. In 15 games Henderson is averaging 17.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists and shooting 44% from the field.

During that stretch Henderson is averaging 5.5 free throw attempts and shooting them at an 88% clip. He looks the most confident offensively since coming into Charlotte and has formed a potent duo with Kemba Walker. This is without mentioning Henderson’s above-average defense and athleticism. The former Dukie is starting to mirror the complete shooting guard the Bobcats envisioned when drafting him four seasons ago.

When Henderson hits free agency this summer, it’s a safe bet his agent will point to his play in the last half of the season, age, and defensive versatility as to why he should get a lucrative contract. Henderson is making just a little over $3.1 million this season. The Bobcats will likely tender him a qualifying offer this summer worth around $4.2 million, which is in line with what Henderson could make in the first year of a new deal.

Will the Bobcats be the team to give him that deal?

In eight years, the Bobcats have re-signed one player they originally drafted or acquired at the draft to a long-term deal. Bad drafting has contributed to that, but so has the Bobcats stay in the bottom of the league. In 2008, they re-signed their first draft pick in team history, Emeka Okafor, to a six-year, $72 million dollar contract. Okafor played one season on his new contract in Charlotte and was dealt to the New Orleans Hornets in exchange for Tyson Chandler. It was never known whether the Bobcats had buyers remorse, though it would add up given Chandler’s shorter contract at the time.

Since then Raymond Felton and D.J. Augustin were the only Bobcats draft picks to stay all four seasons of their rookie contracts. Felton signed his $5.5 million qualifying offer and bolted to New York after that season. Augustin joined the Indiana Pacers this season after the Bobcats decided to make Kemba Walker their full-time starting point guard.

Henderson will be the next in line to negotiate with the Bobcats and surely there will be a number of teams interested. Henderson could make a case for a deal similar to Courtney Lee’s four-year, $22 million pact with the Boston Celtics. Lee turned 27 this season, but brings similar two-way capabilities as Henderson. He could also look for a deal that’s between $6-8 million a year, especially if a team believes Henderson is trending up and would benefit being away from a bad situation in Charlotte. A sign-and-trade is also a possibility.

Another thing to remember is that Kemba Walker will be eligible for an extension following next season. Walker is going to command a lot more money than Henderson, especially if he continues to play anywhere near the level he has this season. Walker is going to be one of the pieces the Bobcats build the team around, and with holes in the frontcourt, Charlotte might be watchful of putting so much money in their backcourt.

Henderson’s recent production is bringing attention back to his long-term future in Charlotte. While the Bobcats might not be winning games, Henderson has the skillset to be a valuable contributor on a playoff or title contender. Henderson’s done his part in showing improvement offensively and having his best statistical season in Charlotte.

This website has been on top of NBA trade rumors involving the Charlotte Bobcats.

The one player whose name keeps coming up as the ‘Cat most likely to be dealt is Gerald Henderson.

We’ve already gone over a few trade scenarios that make sense for Charlotte, but how many teams out there could actually use a guy like Hendo?

Well, the New York Knicks, despite Iman Shumpert’s return Thursday, are severely lacking in terms of their offensive backcourt. Jason Kidd is a solid veteran sharpshooter now, and Ronnie Brewer is pretty good at defense, but even when Raymond Felton comes back, the ‘Bockers still won’t have much offensive firepower at the guard position.

Would NY be willing to make a deal with Charlotte? It’s hard to say, but they could certainly use an athletic wing with a very good midrange game like Henderson.

Another team that could use Henderson is the Los Angeles Lakers.

Yes, the Lakers’ two-guard spot is occupied by Kobe Bryant. But, the Lakers have a sorry bench. Henderson would make their second unit significantly more formidable, but the likelihood of a trade is quite low.

The Lakers don’t have many assets to give away, and the assets they do have are saddled down with massive contracts.

There are a couple other teams who probably wouldn’t mind having Gerald Henderson around for the final few months of his deal (which expires this summer); Team’s like Dallas and Milwaukee could really benefit from his athleticism and mid-range game off the bench.

It’s impossible to say if any of these teams will make a deal for Hendo, but if there is a Bobcat who’s going to be dealt this year, it’s him.

It’s a popular daytime television show enjoyed my many Baby Boomers, as well as Wayne Brady fans, across America.

Let’s Make A Deal has provided everyone through the years with laughter and enjoyment as people dressed in goofy attire hope to win big by risking what they have on various games of chance. It’s about time Charlotte got in on the fun.

I’m all for Charlotte continuing to improve through the NBA Draft as the team continues to follow GM Rich Cho’s idea of growing together to form a powerhouse out of the Southeast Division. Yet I can’t stand the idea of watching missed opportunities for the Cats to get something in return with so many expiring contracts still on the books.

Currently, Charlotte has four players under contract in the last year of their respective deals, and the odds are against all of them for making a return to the team next year (SG Gerald Henderson, SF Reggie Williams, PF/C Byron Mullens, C DeSagana Diop). While all players can add something to any team in the league (slashing, defensive guard; 3-point specialist on the wing; big-man who stretches the floor; big-man who clogs the lane and eats up minutes), none have shown major offensive improvements this season for a team that sorely needs them. Mullens is the only one of the four to improve his shooting numbers throughout this season (11.6 ppg as opposed to 9.3 ppg); however, his field-goal percentage has taken an unfortunate dip in the process (.425% to .371%).

With this in mind, it’s time Charlotte started shopping these players in the hopes of getting draft picks in return, or other players with expiring contracts that better fit Charlotte’s new team motto of “Tougher Faster Stronger” than the current group of players with one-year-remaining contracts.

Yet trading one-year players for other one-year players seems slightly insignificant if Charlotte is to actually try to build for the future; simply replacing athletes for another four months won’t help the team beyond May. Instead, it’s time the good men of the Bobcats’ front office made a run at a legitimate powerhouse player.

A player who can help Charlotte to fulfill the team motto of “Tougher Faster Stronger”.

A player who can bring experience to a young team, and who’s under contract for at least the next two seasons.

A player whose trade stock has plummeted as of late, making now one of the only times Charlotte could make a significant run at him.

Ladies and gentleman, your newest Charlotte Bobcat: Pau Gasol.

Gasol brings everything Charlotte finds themselves without: experience (regular season and playoff), size, strength, rebounding skills, and an offensive post game. Also, after underperforming alongside of Dwight for most of the season (career worst 12.2 ppg, .416% from the field) and coming back from a recent concussion he suffered, Gasol’s trade stock has never been lower, making it the perfect time for Michael Jordan & Co. to act. In the meantime, Charlotte can send one of several packages back Los Angeles’ way that would help the Lakers make a run at the playoffs.

Henderson, Williams, Mullens & Diop: Henderson and Williams would be decent bench options off the bench to allow Kobe Bryant and Metta World Peace some well deserved rest. Meanwhile, Mullens could play the power forward position and do what he does best; step out of the paint and shoot jumpers. This will allow Dwight Howard to roam around freely in the paint, and Mullens the opportunity to pull the trigger without hesitation. Diop would also prove to helpful in allowing Howard plenty of rest as he continues to try and recuperate from his early season back problems.

Henderson/Mullens, Diop & Tyrus Thomas: Now this is the deal I’m sure most Charlotte fans wouldn’t mind seeing happen. While some may not care for the inclusion of Henderson and/or Mullens in any of these scenarios, this last one allows for the Cats to shed Thomas’ horrible contract and rid themselves of the mistake that was made one too many losses ago. Thomas would also allow the Lakers to continue to rest their current big men in their rotation, such as Howard, rookie Robert Sacre, and the veteran Antawn Jamison.

While none of these deals will probably be complete without a few exchanged draft picks (something ESPN’s Trade Machine fails to simulate), it’s about time Charlotte made some moves.

It’s time to make a deal. Let’s just hope that Charlotte doesn’t get Zonked in the process.

I was able to attend my first ever Bobcats game the other night in Beantown, where the young and upbeat Cats took on the savvy veterans better known as the Boston Celtics. And while the final outcome wasn’t perfect (Boston prevailed 100-89), I saw several amazing things take place throughout the night.

Rajon Rondo recorded his 26th career triple-double by posting 17 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds.

Jeff Green threw down another monsterous dunk that further cemented his healthy return to the NBA.

The Bobcats had more steals than the Celtics, as well as less turnovers, less personal fouls, more free-throw attempts, and a better shooting percentage from three-point land.

And Gerald Henderson once again proved as to why and how he doesn’t fit into Charlotte’s system for the future.

On the surface, Henderson’s numbers from the other night look respectable: 10 points (4-of-8 shooting), 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. If you dig deeper, though, you’ll see that Henderson had a rather pitiful night; add his turnover, team-high four personal fouls, and team-worst minus-15 and you’re starting to see the bigger picture…but there’s still more.

Hendo’s shooting percentage (50% from the field, 100% from the line) looks as solid as any that I’ve seen from a shooting guard as of late, except for when you watch the game film. Henderson was 2-of-2 from the field on layups, 1-of-1 on mid-range jump shots, and 1-of-5 on contested-turnaround-fadaway jump shots. Even worse, Henderson began taking these ill-advised shots a mere minute and a half into the game. He finished the first quarter 0-of-4 from the field, helping to lead Charlotte to a 28% field-goal percentage after the game’s first 12 minutes.

To make matters worse, Henderson committed a pointless and even more ill-advised flagrant foul on Kevin Garnett halfway through the second quarter that probably resulted in Kevin Garnett making more references to breakfast cereals on the court.

Henderson’s horrible shot selection along with excessive ball-control ”helped” the Bobcats limp to a 56-45 halftime defecit.

Henderson is an extremely talented ball player; he can drive to the lane just as well as some of the league’s best guards (as apparent by his short-range field-goal percentage), but his ill-advised fadaways, turnarounds, and “shot-clock-winding-down” ball-control does nothing to help Charlotte. The Bobcats excel best in sets that involve plenty of ball movement and high-percentage looks inside. If one were to try and slow the game down as well as take over a game at the same time (a la Dirk, Kobe, or LeBron), they usually wait until the third quarter to try and put the game away. Gerald thought it would be a good idea to try this method 90 seconds into a game against a team that consists of KG, Rondo, Paul Pierce, Jason Terry, Brandon Bass, and the ever-improving rookie Jared Sullinger.

Henderson is in the last year of his contract, and all signs point towards him not returning next season (as apparent by the Bobcats not giving him a contract extention before the season began). Henderson is young and athletic, yet clearly hasn’t learned much in terms of on-court awareness or team dynaminc in his time in the NBA. If he hasn’t learned it by now, I don’t see much room for improvement in the future.

It would be nice to see Gerald Henderson in one of 29 different uniforms by February 21st, with a 2nd-round pick for the 2013 Draft headed Charlotte’s way. His time in Charlotte is ending, and I’m completely fine with that.

The Charlotte Bobcats are knee-deep in an 11-game winning streak, and the team is considering changes. This weekend news broke that the Bobcats are interested in dealing Gerald Henderson. Moving Henderson would help clear the Bobcats crowded backcourt and could also bring back some frontcourt help. The Bobcats are currently last in frontcourt scoring.

It’s a little difficult right now to get a grasp for what teams are going to be in the market for shooting guards. Henderson’s athletic and defensive ability on a salary of a little over $3 million will be intriguing for a lot of teams. If the Bobcats want to take on higher salary, then they can always tag Gana Diop’s $7.3 M expiring with him.

For the purpose of this, I’ve looked at teams who are among the worst in backcourt scoring, in which the Bobcats lead the league at 51.5ppg:

Gerald Henderson, Ramon Sessions, Gana Diop and Bismack Biyombo to the Utah Jazz for Al Jefferson, Alec Burks and Randy Foye. I tried to save the longshot deals for last, but I couldn’t resist. ESPN’s Marc Stein reported that the Jazz could deal either Jefferson or Paul Millsap before the trade deadline, as both will hit free agency next summer. The Jazz have young bigs in Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors who they think will fill their shoes going forward. Jefferson and Millsap are the Jazz’s two top players, so it’s likely they would ask for a solid return. The Jazz are reportedly seeking a “front-line point guard” in a deal for one of the two. Sessions seems to fit that bill, and they would get a productive guard in Henderson and a young big in Biyombo to go along with it. For the Bobcats, you get an 18-20ppg scorer who you can start at center and re-sign the following season. Getting Alec Burks would also be interesting, as he’s been disappointing with the Jazz.

Gerald Henderson to the Indiana Pacers for Tyler Hansbrough. The Pacers used to value Hansbrough highly, but this season his minutes have been cut from 22mpg to 16mpg. Part of that has been the play of David West. Hansbrough’s points per 36 have declined for four seasons and he’s on track to become a restricted free agent. The Pacers are tied for last in backcourt scoring, and Henderson could be a cheap option to help boost that. For the Bobcats, Hansbrough would bring energy, toughness and rebounding to the Bobcats struggling frontcourt. He’s the type of player whose effort would quickly fit in with Mike Dunlap’s style. If Hansbrough adapts well, he could be a player the Bobcats bring back. It’d be a lot more likely than bringing Henderson back to a crowded backcourt.

Gerald Henderson and Reggie Williams to the Orlando Magic for Glen Davis. Davis isn’t the most efficient scorer, but is averaging about 16ppg for the Magic as a starter. If Orlando is looking for ways to shed salary, a deal like this would get them out of the last two years of Davis’ contract, while allowing more space to develop their younger players. For the Bobcats, Davis would improve their scoring whether off the bench or as a starter.

Gerald Henderson and Bismack Biyombo to the Phoenix Suns for Marcin Gortat. I like this deal a lot for the Bobcats, though it’s very risky. With Steve Nash gone, Gortat’s numbers and use have slipped in Phoenix. There’s been a lot of rumblings that Gortat could be dealt at the deadline because of it. Gortat I feel would be a lot more suited for Charlotte than Phoenix. The Bobcats could use his low post play offensively, as well as his defense. He could immediately become the teams starting center. Gortat is only under contract through next season, for a little over $7M. Biyombo still has a lot of upside, but I think a player like Gortat who’s shown to be effective on both sides of the ball, would fit a lot better.

It will be interesting to see how the market shapes up for Henderson, and while these particular deals might not happen, I do think that the teams will be interested, as all lack backcourt production.

Rumors of a Gerald Henderson trade surfaced recently, and it’s well known that the Charlotte Bobcats would like to move Gana Diop and his expiring contract.

I think the ‘Cats would also love to unload Tyrus Thomas, instead of amnestying him, but that would be the hardest sell of them all. GM Rich Cho has done hard things before, though.

So what possible deals actually exist for Charlotte, and would any of those moves help the team?

Well, it’ll be hard for Charlotte to land any of the big names on the block like Pau Gasol, Kevin Love and to a lesser extent Anderson Varejao and Andrea Bargnani. For one thing, Gasol and Bargnani are hurt. For another, the ‘Cats don’t have any package at all to trick Minnesota into sending Love down south.

There are other players Charlotte could target, though. Non-star players on non-star contracts who could make the team better.

Here are two trades that make sense both for Charlotte and the team they’re trading Hendo or Diop to:

Charlotte trades Gerald Henderson to Houston for Patrick Patterson. The Rockets are loaded with depth in the front court, but after Jeremy Lin and James Harden, their guards are Daequan Cook, Toney Douglas and Scott Machodo. Henderson is an upgrade over all those players. Likewise for the Bobcats, Patterson is an upgrade over almost every Bobcats big, except maybe Brendan Haywood. Patterson is still on his rookie deal, and is putting up more-than-solid numbers in just in his second NBA season.

It’s hard to say if Houston really wants to upgrade their back court and let Patterson go to do that, but they are saddled down with young players, and after the draft everyone was talking about them moving more than just Jeremy Lamb who they traded away to Oklahoma City.

Next, the Toronto Raptors are stuck in the doldrums like the Bobcats, so maybe they’d want to take a shot at adding some talent in this summer’s free agency extraveganza. The only problem is they have just one contract worth more than a $1 million coming off the books this year in the form of Jose Calderon’s $10 million deal. The Bobcats could help ease Toronto’s by trading Gana Diop for Aaron Gray and Ed Davis and Quincy Acy.

With that trade, the Raptors would shed around $18 million off their roster when the season ends, and they’d only have to trade away two guys who play less than ten minutes per game each and their second round pick from the last draft to make that happen. For the Bobcats, this deal would basically swap one overpaid bench warmer for a cheap bench warmer in Gray, and add a talented, but little-used power forward in Davis. They’d also only be taking on two year salaries (except for the $665,000 per year deal Acy has), and which will leave them more room to work with in 2014 than they already have with three big earners on two year deals already.

Again, that deal is dependent on how flexible Toronto would like to be in this summer’s free agency.

Neither of these deals are imminent or even likely, but they are the types of deals Charlotte is going to have to look for if it really wants to move Henderson and Diop.

And, if the Bobcats don’t move either player, they’ve got over $10 million in new cap space after the season.

Could Gerald Henderson be on the move by February 21? According to Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports, the Bobcats are interested in dealing Henderson. An NBA general manager said that the Bobcats “were playing their best basketball of the season without Henderson” and that if they don’t look like they can afford him, they will move him.

I posted an article yesterday opining that it’s time for the Bobcats to deal Henderson, who’s played in just nine games this season after being sidelined with a foot injury. The Bobcats are just 1-8 with Henderson in the lineup this season, compared to 6-7 with him out. With Henderson’s return, minutes from Ben Gordon and Ramon Sessions, two big contributors for the team during their hot start, have gone down.

Henderson makes $3.1 million this season and could be combined with the expiring contracts of Gana Diop or Reggie Williams to bring in a some help in the frontcourt for the Bobcats. There are always teams looking for backcourt help at the deadline, and young, cheap rentals like Henderson tend to be valued pretty well approaching the deadline.

Five days ago Gerald Henderson celebrated his 25th birthday.

It was the day before Henderson went 2-7 in 18 minutes against the Warriors. Since returning from an injury in November, Henderson’s starting job has gone to second round pick Jeffrey Taylor. Taylor has started 20 games this season, as Coach Dunlap likes what he brings on both sides of the ball as a three-point shooter and defender.

In nine games, Henderson hasn’t been bad. He has a 16.8 PER, a 55.4% TS, and is averaging the most scoring of his career per minute. Henderson’s improved mid-range shooting, athleticism, and defensive versatility has made him coveted by some Bobcats fans over the past three seasons.

However, Henderson was not given a contract extension in the offseason by the Bobcats, and he’ll enter restricted free agency next summer.

When you consider Henderson’s reduced role in a crowded Bobcats backcourt, it’s time for the Bobcats to move on from Henderson.

Since Henderson’s return Gordon hasn’t played 30 minutes or more. It’s disappointing considering Gordon has been our best scoring and shooting threat this season, and currently has the highest three-point percentage of his career (.448).

The problem is the same for Ramon Sessions, whose scoring numbers are down after a hot start. Both Gordon and Sessions were instrumental in the Bobcats hot start early this season, and now have seen their minutes slashed to fit an inferior player in Henderson.

One of the biggest keys for the Bobcats under Rich Cho is to be more careful when managing their payroll. In the past the Bobcats have given out extensions they’ve instantly regretted (Emeka Okafor, Tyrus Thomas), and taken on bad contracts who never produced well for the team (Tyson Chandler, Corey Maggette, Gana Diop). While Henderson certainly wouldn’t command a high salary on the open market, the Bobcats really have no reason to extend him with Walker, Taylor, Sessions and Gordon on the team.

Even extending a qualifying offer wouldn’t make sense. Taylor’s starting job combined with the acquisitions above got the wheels turning on what could be the end of Henderson’s Bobcats tenure.

The good thing is the Bobcats wouldn’t have trouble finding a suitor for Henderson, given his cheap salary. The Bobcats could even combine Henderson with Gana Diop’s $7M expiring or Reggie Williams to take on a higher-salary player. There’s a lot of different ways they can go with it.

Watching this team feels like watching a team that obviously needs a trade to make room for better player impact. For me, Henderson makes the most sense as an asset to sell high on and avoid long-term commitment down the road.

J.R. Smith hit a game winning field goal as time expired, and sunk the Bobcats chance to win a game they had stayed close in throughout. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist’s turnover with 7.9 seconds left gave the Knicks a chance to take the last shot and win the game, and J.R. Smith didn’t miss.

The Bobcats did what they needed to do as far as controlling Carmelo Anthony. Anthony only had 23 points, and only went 8-22 from the field, but Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton picked up the slack.

However, the real problem is the Bobcats lost the 4th quarter again. If the ‘Cats hope to get back to winning, they are going to need to start winning the 4th quarter again.

The Bobcats really did well in all facets of the game. They dominated the boards, shot well from three, and shot well from the free throw line. The thing that cost them were the turnovers, especially late in the game.

Some bright spots for the Bobcats were Kemba Walker and Gerald Henderson. Byron Mullens continued to struggle posting only six points and a -13 +/-.

Gerald Henderson had 18 points, and looked like he was starting to return to form in only his second game back from injury. Henderson played 25 minutes, and will continue to work his way back.

Kemba Walker continued his good work posting 25 points and shooting over 50% from the field. Walker also took care of the ball only turning the ball over once.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist played effeciently, but he had four untimely turnovers including the one to give the Knicks the ball for the last shot.

With the loss the Bobcats dropped to 7-10, and the Knicks improved to 13-4. The Bobcats really need to get back to winning if they want to stay in the playoff hunt.

The Bobcats play next Friday at 8:30 in Milwaukee against the Bucks.
