USA Today is reporting that Josh Smith’s future with the Atlanta Hawks could be in jeopardy after being suspended by the club for “conduct detrimental to the team”. NBC Sports says Smith’s agent met with the team after his suspension, but stopped short of demanding a trade. Still, Twitter ran rampant with rumors of an impending deal Wednesday afternoon. With all this news, should the Charlotte Bobcats try to acquire Smith if he’s available?

Smith is a career 15 point, eight rebound, three assist per game player, and he’s averaging slightly better numbers this season.

He’s also in the last year of his deal and he’ll become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

For that reason alone, there’s no way the Bobcats should give up anything for him.

There’s no way Smith would re-sign with Charlotte if the ‘Cats traded for him this season.

Even if he was a restricted free-agent, and the Bobcats could pay him more than any other team, Smith still probably wouldn’t come back to Charlotte.

And that’s the problem the Bobcats have with most of the “star” players on the trading block this year.

There’s no point making a trade if the player you’re trading for is only going to be around for half a season that ends with another trip to the lottery.
